Hood Joplin

Hood Joplin is a producer, dj, and [sometimes] vocalist who makes heavy yet soulful juke and hip-hop hybrids, constantly pushing her realm of electronic music forward. Born in one of the most diverse neighbourhoods in Canada’s north, HJ’s culturally diverse background has given her a wholistic interpretation of hip-hop and electronic music and has turned the grey space in between the genres into her own.

After being found through her first release on Philadelphia’s Gwappy Boyz label in 2014, Drama Hands founder j.d.Rhodes approached her in taking her sleuthy internet chopped and screwed hybrids (with a heavy dose of rap and club combined) from online to her first show, and eventually a project release; in 2016 her debut EP #75FFA1 was born into the world. In 2017 HJ’s HAZARD album on Vancouver’s OWAKE Records has proven her to be an ever evolving artist, tiptoeing in between the producer booth and the mic. Her most recent project Bank Account, a split tape alongside producer Text Chunk, proves to be the next step into the expansion of her sonic exploration.
